Life Insurance & Critical Illness

Protect your home, family and lifestyle with cover that pays a lump sum of money if you die or are diagnosed with a critical illness.

Being struck down with a critical illness, such as cancer, can place a real financial strain on you and your family. TQ Protect can help you choose the right type of cover at the best possible price.

Key features:

  • Pay monthly or annually
  • Lump sum benefit free of income and capital gains tax
  • Flexible cover
  • Joint cover available for you and your partner
  • Easy application process

Things to remember:

  • By taking out critical illness and life insurance, you can protect against serious illness or death.
  • You are covered for the term of the policy.
  • If you stop paying your monthly or annual premiums your cover will be cancelled.
  • The amount and type of cover you need will depend upon your personal circumstances.
  • You should never cancel an existing policy unless a replacement has started.
  • Critical illness is more expensive than life insurance, however, the likelihood of having a serious illness is far higher than dying.

What is critical illness insurance?

This type of cover pays out a tax free lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious illness, which may leave you unable to work, and which may require you to receive care and make significant changes to your home.

  • The amount of cover you receive will stay the same over the duration of the policy.
  • If you suffer a critical illness that is specified in the policy wording before the end of the policy, a lump sum is paid to you.
  • The money can be used in any way you wish, but it is usually used to ease the financial loss serious illness can bring to a family, by paying bills and covering the cost of care and home modifications
  • Critical illness cover can be added to life insurance to cover both serious illness and death.
  • In some instances you can add cover should your child suffer serious illness.

Every policy has slight differences in the types of serious illness you are protected against. The most common types of illness covered includes:

  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Organ failure
  • Organ transplant
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Certain kinds of cancer
  • Loss of limbs

Critical Illness FAQs

Q. Why have Critical Illness cover when you already have life insurance?

A. If you get critically ill, chances are, you can still survive and even recover. Today’s medical advances will help in that. However, you will need considerable funds for you to get the treatments you need. This is where critical illness insurance can come in. This will prevent your family’s finances from becoming depleted and the critical illness payout will help in providing for your family’s needs at this difficult time.

Q. What is the difference between Critical Illness insurance and Terminal Illness insurance?

A. Terminal Illness cover pays out if you are diagnosed with an illness from which a Doctor certifies that you are expected to die within 12 months of diagnosis. However, with Critical Illness Insurance you do NOT have to be expected to die within 12 months of diagnosis.

Q. What if I need to make a change to my policy?

A. We recognise that sometimes your protection needs change, and as your needs change, so should your cover. We can help you make these changes to your policy. In most cases you have the freedom to:

  • change the term of your policy
  • increase or decrease the amount of cover under your policy
  • remove a life from a joint policy where cover is no longer required for that person

Q. As my policy includes life and critical illness cover, does that mean it could pay out twice, once if I get a critical illness and then again if I die?

A. No, most policies pay out once, either on death or diagnosis of a critical illness. Once a valid claim has been received and the payment made, the policy ends.
