What type of life insurance do I need?

Benefits

  • The amount of cover you receive will stay the same over the duration of the policy.
  • If you die before the end of the policy, a lump sum is paid to your estate, or into trust if you have arranged it that way.
  • The money can be used in any way your beneficiaries wish, but it is usually used to ease the financial loss death can bring to a family, by paying for ongoing living costs.
  • Terminal illness benefit may be added to the policy free of charge.

  • Less expensive than level term cover.
  • If you die before the end of the policy, a lump sum is paid to your beneficiaries to pay off outstanding debts, including your mortgage.
  • Terminal illness benefit may be added to the policy free of charge.

Top tip

Inflation will reduce the value of your lump sum benefit. If you know the exact amount you need to provide cover for, you should take inflation into account.

Life Insurance FAQs

Q. Who can apply for life cover?

A. You can apply for Life Insurance if you're a UK resident aged between 18 and 66. A UK resident is defined as someone who permanently resides in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (excluding the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man).

Q. Are pay-outs taxed?

A. Pay-outs for terminal illness and life claims are usually free of income and capital gains tax, but in some circumstances inheritance tax may be payable. You can normally help to avoid this by putting your plan in trust. Bear in mind that the law relating to tax may change in the future.

Q. What if I need to make a change to my policy?

A. We recognise that sometimes your protection needs change, and as your needs change, so should your cover. We can help you make these changes to your policy. In most cases you have the freedom to:

  • change the term of your policy
  • increase or decrease the amount of cover under your policy
  • remove a life from a joint policy where cover is no longer required for that person

Q. What is terminal illness?

A. Terminal illness cover, in most cases, is included with your life insurance policy and providers cover for you if you were diagnosed with a terminal illness, meaning you can claim on your life insurance before you die. There will be restrictions and terms and conditions, make sure you read your policy documents.
